Reasons Why You Should Move to Berlin This Summer

Updated: Sep 27, 2019

Capital cities are usually synonymous with being fast-paced and highly-strung. Berlin, on the other hand, is an exception to the rule—it is a big city anomaly. The city holds a distinctive quirky charm. It is a chilled out urban oasis filled with creatives, artists and nomads. Berlin is certainly not a city that can be conquered over a long weekend, it needs to be explored and uncovered through learning the language, history and culture of this marvellous city.

1. Parks, Picnics and BBQs

With 2500 parks in the city, there is no shortage of places to sit back and ponder the rich history that has shaped Berlin. Victoria Park is home to many a grassy knoll, cool views of Berlin and even a waterfall. At Tempelhof, an old airport turned urban park, you can fly down the runway on your bike or roller-blades and marvel at Berlin’s many social clubs including Bollywood dancers, kiteboarders and cycling enthusiasts to name just a few.

2. Bars, Clubs and Beer Gardens

Do you love partying? If yes, then where better to live than in the party capital of Europe. In Berlin, those with the stamina can literally party all day every day in some of the best clubs in the world. If clubs aren’t your shtick, then there are a host of beer gardens, live music joints, and funky bars to frequent until your heart’s content. Berlin has something for everyone, for every scene, niche, and interest.

3. Lakes, Swimming Pools and Beach Bars

After a chilly winter, Berlin rewards us with many gloriously sunny days. Berlin has lakes galore to kick back and relax—you’ll be surprised just how stunning many of the city's lakes are. But if you fancy an inner-city dip, then Badeschiff, a swimming pool floating in the river Spree, is a perfect way to cool off on a hot summer's day. Alternatively, you can head to Haubentaucher, a discreetly located swimming pool club with DJs spinning tunes and cocktails to boot. Although the city lacks a natural beach, entrepreneurial Berlin has an array of man-made beach bars if you’re looking for a cold drink to refresh you—why not check out Yaam, Sage or Kater Blau.

4. Events, Festivals and Street Parties

Berlin comes alive during the summer! From open-air festivals to street food markets and street parties, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate summer with your fellow Berliners. Check out Nomaden Berlin’s other blog posts to see some of the amazing annual events and huge street parties which are taking place in Berlin over the summer.

5. History, Secrets and Stories

Berlin is not only about sun, fun and games, you will also be gripped by the dramatic history that has shaped the city. There is much more to Berlin than that which meets the eye—it is an intricate web of secrets and stories from spy stations and bunkers to war memorials and much much more. You can visit an abandoned cold war spy station built on a hill of rubble as well as the gardens and palaces of Potsdam, which date right back to the Bronze Age.

6. Street Food, Markets and Restaurants

With a growing number of restaurants and street food vendors popping up, Berlin’s mouth-watering food scene is one that must not be overlooked. Every Thursday there is a street food market at Markthalleneun in Kreuzberg and on the weekends you can sample Berlin's finest Thai food at Thaipark in Charlottenburg. Turkish food is ever-present in Berlin—you rarely need to walk further than a block for an astonishingly succulent and tasty kebab. In Berlin, kebabs are not just for the 3 am crowd, you'll find punters lining up at all hours to sample some of the cities finest such as Mustafa's kebabs.

7. Cheap, cheap, cheap

Berlin is known to be one of the cheapest cities in Western Europe and is one of the few capitals where you can get a great meal for 5 euros and follow it up with one of the many great free activities on offer. Read our post on the cost of living in Berlin.
